Finally Whitehorse - capital of Yukon *

Waiting for a bus. Did not have anything to do but to play with the camera.

Yukon river

Yukon river again. For next two weeks I will see it and its tributaries 24 hours a day.

Wheeled steam boats like that sailed Yukon river from 1900 till 50ties.

They had wooden hull and extremly small draught because Yukon is very shallow

Fisrt day I was too excited to go to bed, so I wondered around till sunset

Sunset on Yukon at this time is around 10pm, but because it is so close to arctic circle it is not dark till midnght.

Monument to gold-diggers, people how explorered this land.

First interesting wild anymal - large eagle. Just steps from campsite.

Size of its wings was approximately 1,5 meters.

The Whitehorse Rapids generating facility was built in 1958 at a cost of $7.2 million. It began with two hydro turbines, and in 1969 a third one was added. A fourth turbine was installed in 1985 (referred to as the Fourth Wheel) which doubled the capacity of the plant.

Our Whitehorse hydro facility can now produce 40 megawatts of power. That's enough to light up one million 40 watt lightbulbs! In winter, the water in the Yukon River doesn't flow as fast, so the plant can only produce about 25 megawatts during those months.

Indians used to catch salmon with such traps.
It is quite big, its length is about 1m *
